USAID DEVELOPS WOMEN’S CRAFTSMANSHIP IN CENTRAL ASIA

Almaty, Kazakhstan — USAID’s Regional Economic Cooperation Project has awarded a grant to Raisa Fashion House LLP (Pavlodar/Kazakhstan) to raise the quality of women’s craftsmanship and craft item sales in the Central Asian Republics. Raisa Fashion House LLP was established in 1993 and produces national costumes, clothes and souvenirs. The company, which has participated in previous US Embassy programs, also received a new “Brother PR 650e” embroidery machine as part of this grant.

CIVIL SOCIETY ORGS UNITE ACROSS CENTRAL ASIA AND CIS

June 04, 2013 Almaty, Kazakhstan - Civil society groups across Central Asia and the CIS gathered at KIMEP University in Almaty to exchange ideas for strengthening their organizations’ ability to respond to public needs. Over 150 representatives of NGOs, local governments, media, and donors shared best practices for access to information, financial sustainability and cooperation with Parliament and Government. Master classes and training workshops focused on planning, monitoring and evaluation, crowd-funding technologies, development of network organizations.

Over 40,000 Residents Gain Steady Access to Irrigation Water in Kulob and Vose Districts

Representatives from the USAID Family Farming program participated in a ceremony to officially open “Selbur” Water User Association in Vose and “Obi Shirin-D” Water User Association in the Kulob district. These groups were formed through an open and participatory process involving small-scale and commercial farmers, community leaders, and government officials. 

Farmers in Vose and Kulob districts do not have regular access to irrigation water and many canals and drainage channels have fallen into disrepair.

U.S. Government Supports Tajikistan Statistical Agency in Health Data Collection

United States Ambassador Susan Elliott, Head of Department of Health, Family and Women Affairs of the Presidential Administration, Lola Bobokhojieva, Director of the Statistical Agency, Bahtiya Muhammadieva, and the First Deputy Minister of Health, Saida Jobirova, participated in the presentation of an internationally recognized Demographic and Health Survey preliminary report.

Tajikistan showed positive improvements in some of their health indicators.

U.S. Government Celebrates World Water Day

On March 22, the global community will celebrate World Water Day 2013, with the motto “Clean Water for a Healthy World.” In celebration of World Water Day, Ambassador Susan Elliott and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Country Director Kathleen McDonald participated in a ceremony to officially open the “Navruz” Water Users Association in the Shahritus district. Local government officials, local citizens and implementers of the U.S. Government’s “Feed the Future” initiative attended the ceremony.

U.S. Ambassador Susan Elliott, Deputy Prime Minister Murodali Alimardon, and Khatlon Region Chairman Ghaibullo Afzal officially opened the U.S. Agency for International Development's (USAID) second Agricultural Inputs Fair - International Agro-Expo Khatlon-2013 – in Qurghonteppa today. The fair brings together farmers, agribusinesses, financial institutions, and international and domestic input dealers to facilitate business relationships and promote trade.
